Results of Saginaw Students at ISEF 2003

Two Saginaw students received Grand Awards including the Best in Category Award at the 54th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Cleveland, Ohio. Sam Howell, Kunil Raval, Alice Bagley and Yolanda Brooks received a combined total of fourteen grand awards, special awards and scholarships.

Sam Howell received a Intel ISEF Best of Biochemistry Category Award of $5,000 as the Top First Place Winner for his project “A Study of the Relationship Between Lymphocytes With Lymphomatoid Papulosis and Mucosal Cells from a Subject and Descendants Using PCR Identification.” Intel will present Best of Category Winners with a $5,000 scholarship and a high-performance computer. Additionally, a $1,000 grant will be given to their school and the Intel ISEF affiliated fair he represents.

Additionally, Sam received a partial tuition scholarship in Biochemistry from Indiana University. The tuition scholarship is for $5,000 per year for four years, total value of $20,000. He also received a four-year scholarship in the total amount of $8,000 as a First Award from the U.S. Navy & Marine Corps. Sam, a junior attending the Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy, worked with his teacher Matt Miller on the project, and received a Grand First Award at the MichSEF. Sam placed fourth in the SCSEF25.

Kunil Raval received a Fourth Award in Chemistry of $500 for his project “A Novel Room Temperature Fuel Cell Utilizing a Carbonate Ionic Liquid Electrolyte.” He also received eight special awards, more than any other finalist at the Cleveland Intel ISEF did. His awards are:

American Chemical Society - Second Award of $500

Results of Saginaw Students at MichSEF 2003

Two Saginaw students swept the top awards at the Ninth Annual Michigan Science and Engineering Fair at Oakland University on Saturday, April 12, 2003. Kunil Raval, a Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy senior, won his second consecutive Grand First Award, and Samuel Howell, a Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy junior, also won a Grand First Award. Both Kunil and Sam and will represent Michigan at the 54th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held in Cleveland.

Kunil received a Grand First Award for his project “A Novel Room Temperature Fuel cell utilizing a Carbonate Ionic Liquid.” Kunil worked with his teacher Dan Sealey on the project. Kunil took first place in this year’s 25th Annual Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair. Kunil is the first student to take the Grand First Award in consecutive years at the MichSEF.

Sam received a Grand First Award for his project “A study of the relationship between cutaneous lymphocytes affected with Lymphomatoid Papulosis and the buccal mucosal cells of the subject and subsequent descendants utilizing the PMCT118 polymorphic Locus.” Sam worked with his teacher Matt Miller on the project, and took fourth place in this year’s Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair.

Sam and Kunil become the eighth and ninth students from Saginaw to take the Grand First Awards in the past eight years. They join Kunil Raval (2002), Adam Finkbeiner (2001), Paul Treib (2001), Stacy Finkbeiner (2000), Paul Treib (1999), Abbie Tingstad (1998) and Anne Merriam (1996).

Kunil is one of three students from the MichSEF who were offered four year, full tuition scholarships to Oakland University. Sam is the first alternate to receive one of the scholarships if any of the three declines. Sam and Kunil also receive a plaque and a $200 savings bond.

By Kunil receiving a Grand First Award at the MichSEF and becoming an Intel ISEF Finalist for the state of Michigan, Yolanda Brooks will become an Intel ISEF Finalist representing Saginaw County. Yolanda, Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy senior, placed third at this year’s SCSEF25.

Mei Ling Liu, Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy sophomore, and Yolanda Brooks received Fourth Awards, consisting of a plaque and a $50 U. S. Savings Bond. Mei Ling’s project is “The Effects of Carbon Dioxide Tension on Plant Growth.” Yolanda’s project is “Bioremediation of Polychlorinated Biphenyl Pollutants in the Saginaw River.” Both students worked with Dan Sealey on their projects.

Additionally, three students received Special Awards, which are given by various businesses and professional organizations. Those students and the awarding organization are:

Casey Schwandt -- American Meteorological Society

Angela Schrestha -- National Association of Corrosion Engineers International

Yolanda Brooks -- Association for Women Geoscientists

First through fourth place awards go to no more than the top third of the students at the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair. The eight ISEF-affiliated fairs in Michigan (Saginaw County, Flint Area, Ann Arbor, Battle Creek/Kalamazoo, and four Metro Detroit area) can send their top ten students to compete in the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair. Students from schools outside the areas are invited to compete directly in the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair without first qualifying through a regional fair. The Michigan Science and Engineering Fair is sponsored by the Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit and was hosted at Oakland University.
