Results of Saginaw Students at ISEF 2004

A Saginaw student received two awards at the 55th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Portland, Oregon. Sam Howell received a Fourth Award in Medicine and Health for his project “Y-chromosomal detection of foreign lymphocytes residing in a subject affected with lymphplumatoid papulosis.” Sam worked with his teacher Matt Miller on the project. Sam also received the U. S. Army First Place Award consisting of $3,000 in Savings Bonds, a certificate of achievement and a gold medallion. Sam took first place in this year’s Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair (SCSEF) and Grand First Award at this year’s Michigan Science and Engineering Fair (MichSEF). This is Sam’s second time as a finalist at the Intel ISEF. He is the fifth student from Saginaw to receive Grand Awards at more than one ISEF. Others receiving multiple ISEF Grand Awards are: Khary Bridgewater (1988, 1989, and 1991), Darrell Schlicker (1988, 1999), Nathan Lord (2001, 2002) and Kunil Raval (2002, 2003).

Quintisha Walker, a Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy sophomore, and Mei Ling Liu, a Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy junior, were ISEF Finalists representing Saginaw County. Background information:

At the Cleveland Intel ISEF last year, Sam Howell received a Intel ISEF Best of Biochemistry Category Award as the Top First Place Winner for his project “A Study of the Relationship Between Lymphocytes With Lymphomatoid Papulosis and Mucosal Cells from a Subject and Descendants Using PCR Identification.” Intel presented him with a $5,000 scholarship and a high-performance computer. Additionally, a $1,000 grant went to his school. Additionally, Sam received a partial tuition scholarship in Biochemistry from Indiana University. The tuition scholarship is for $5,000 per year for four years, total value of $20,000. Sam and will represent Michigan at the 55th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) to be held in Portland this May.

Sam received a Grand First Award for his project “Y-chromosomal detection of foreign lymphocytes residing in a subject affected with lymphplumatoid papulosis.” Sam worked with his teacher Matt Miller on the project. Sam took first place in this year’s Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair (SCSEF). Sam is the second student to take the Grand First Award in consecutive years at the MichSEF.

Sam becomes the tenth student from Saginaw to take the Grand First Awards in the past nine years. He joins Kunil Raval (2001, 2002), Adam Finkbeiner (2001), Paul Treib (1999, 2001), Stacy Finkbeiner (2000), Abbie Tingstad (1998) and Anne Merriam (1996).

By Sam receiving a Grand First Award at the MichSEF and becoming an Intel ISEF Finalist for the state of Michigan, Mei Ling Liu will become an Intel ISEF Finalist representing Saginaw County. First through fourth place awards go to no more than the top third of the students at the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair. The eight ISEF-affiliated fairs in Michigan (Saginaw County, Flint Area, Ann Arbor, Battle Creek/Kalamazoo, and four Metro Detroit area) can send their top ten students to compete in the MichSEF. Students from schools outside the areas are invited to compete directly in the MichSEF without first qualifying through a regional fair. The MichSEF is sponsored by the Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit. The SCSEF has been affiliated with the MichSEF for nine years (including this year), and has sent 90 students to compete at the state level. In that time, our students have received fifty-four Grand Awards, including ten Grand First Awards (the Science Fair equivalent of a State Champion.)
