of the 29th Annual Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair March 16-18, 2007The Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair is sponsored by the
Community Education Department of the Saginaw Public Schools, in cooperation
with the Dow Corning Corporation and local businesses and organizations. Congratulations
to all of our students. We had a total of 311 students
participating in this year’s SCSEF. The Saginaw County Science &
Engineering Fair (SCSEF) is affiliated with
the Michigan Science & Engineering Fair (MichSEF)
and the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF).
As an affiliate, Saginaw County can send five students in each of our Junior
and Elementary sections to the Discovery Channel Young Scientists Challenge,
ten Senior Division students to the MISEF and two Senior Division students to
the Intel ISEF. We have four types of awards: Special
Awards, Category Awards, Grand Awards and Future Competition Qualifiers. Special Awards
come from organizations wishing to reward student research in a particular
area of research or using a particular methodology. Category awards are within the
student’s research category, such as Botany, Chemistry, Engineering, etc. Grand Awards
are the recognition of First Class projects. Future Competition Qualifiers are students who placed in the top 5 of the Elementary or Junior
Divisions and have qualified for the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge,
or Senior Division students who placed in the top 10 and will represent
Saginaw County at the MichSEF, or Senior Division students who placed first
or second and will represent Saginaw County at the Intel ISEF. We
awarded a total of 180 awards to 118 students. |

Saginaw Student Wins Best In Category At Intel
ISEF 2007
William Martin received a Best in Category Award in Materials
and Bioengineering (see
page 14 of the .pdf) at the Albuquerque Intel ISEF on May 18. William
receives the award for his project, “Cooling High Power Density
Microprocessors: Employment Of A Liquid Gallium-Indium-Tin Eutectic Coolant
Within A Magnetohydrodynamic Heat Transfer Pump.” William will receive
$8,000 in prize money and have a small planet or asteroid named in his honor.
William receives $6,000 from the Intel Foundation for receiving the Best in Category award, $3,000 for receiving a First Place in the Materials and Bioengineering category, and will have a minor planet named in his honor through the Ceres Connection and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory. Additionally, the Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair (SCSEF) and the Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy will each receive $1,000 in his honor. William worked with his teacher, Matt Miller, on his project. William received a Second Award at this year’s Michigan Science and Engineering Fair (MichSEF), held March 31 at Flint’s Kettering University, and placed second in this year’s SCSEF. Additional coverage by The Saginaw News is here.
David McMillon, a Saginaw Arts
and Sciences Academy junior, was the other ISEF Finalists representing Saginaw
County. David’s project is “The Plausibility And Limits Of A “Cosmic
Compass" For Determining The Position And Related Time Derivatives Of A
Space Vehicle Relative To A Frame Of Reference Anywhere In The Universe,
Applying Universal Trilateration With Four Celestial Emitters Of Any
Electromagnetic Wavelength.” David took first place in this year’s SCSEF and
worked with Gary Johnson on his project.
The Best in Category Award only goes to seventeen
students at the Intel ISEF. Grand Awards at the Intel ISEF are categorized
first through fourth, and go to the top third of the students in each category.
In the twenty-three years that it has been affiliated with the Intel ISEF, the
SCSEF has sent fifty-six students (two per year, plus ten MichSEF state Grand
First Award winners.) These students have won twenty-two Grand Awards and an
additional thirty-five Special Awards or Scholarships. William is the third
student from Saginaw County to receive a Best In Category award at an Intel
ISEF, joining Sam Howell (2003) and Chris Stark (1996).
Information on awards at the Albuquerque Intel ISEF
is available at: http://www.sciserv.org/isef/results.
Saginaw Students Take Honors at 2007 MichSEF
Five Saginaw students received grand awards at the Thirteenth Annual Michigan Science and Engineering Fair (MichSEF) at Kettering University in Flint on Saturday, March 31, 2007.
William Martin and David McMillon received
Second Awards for their projects. David, a Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy
junior, placed first in this year’s SCSEF for his project “The Plausibility And Limits Of A ‘Cosmic Compass’ For Determining The
Position And Related Time Derivatives Of A Space Vehicle Relative To A Frame Of
Reference Anywhere In The Universe, Applying Universal Trilateration With Four
Celestial Emitters Of Any Electromagnetic Wavelength.” William, a
Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy senior, placed second in this year’s SCSEF
for his project “Cooling High Power Density
Microprocessors: Employment Of A Liquid Gallium-Indium-Tin Eutectic Coolant
Within A Magnetohydrodynamic Heat Transfer Pump.” Both David and
William will represent Saginaw County at the 58th Intel ISEF will be
held May 13-19, 2007 in Albuquerque.
Nolan Ford and Elizabeth Williams received Third
Awards for their projects. Elizabeth, a Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy
junior, received the award for her project “An
Epidemiological Analysis Of Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibititor (Slpi): The Effects Of Smoking On Its
Salivary Concentration And Ability To Inhibit Associated Secondary Disease
Processes Of Acquired Immunodefciency Syndrome.” Nolan, a
Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy junior, received the award for his project
“Effects Of Green Tea On Cell Survival In A Cell
Culture Model Of Huntington's Disease.”
Benjamin Platko, a Saginaw Arts & Sciences
Academy sophomore, received a Fourth Award for his project “Designing A Passive Cooling System For Overclocked Processors.”
Additionally, William & Elizabeth were offered four year scholarships to attend Kettering University payable for $5,000 per year. Kettering University has hosted the MichSEF for the past 4 years. The scholarships (a total of four were offered) were selected by Kettering professors to go to juniors and seniors who conducted outstanding research.
Five
students from Saginaw also received Professional Awards, which are given by
various businesses and professional organizations. Those students and the
awarding organization are:
Nolan Ford Society for In Vitro Biology
Excellence Award
William Martin U. S. Navy Outstanding Research
Award
David McMillon U. S. Navy Outstanding Research
Award
David McMillon Michigan Earth Science
Teachers Association Award
Benjamin Platko Ricoh Corporation Renewable
Resources Award
Nicole Smith Stockholm Junior Water Prize
First
through fourth place awards go to no more than the top third of the students at
the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair. The eight ISEF-affiliated fairs in
Michigan (Saginaw County, Flint Area, Ann Arbor, Battle Creek/Kalamazoo, and
four Metro Detroit area) can send their top ten students to compete in the
MichSEF. Students from schools outside the areas are invited to compete
directly in the MichSEF without first qualifying through a regional fair. The
Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair is sponsored by the Community
Education Department of the Saginaw Public Schools with the cooperation of the
Dow Corning Corporation and various local corporations and organizations.
The SCSEF has been affiliated with the MichSEF for twelve years, and has sent 120 students to compete at the state level. In that time, our students have received sixty-nine Grand Awards, including ten Grand First Awards (the Science Fair equivalent of a State Champion.) These students have also received seventy-five Category, Special, Professional or Scholarship Awards.
A
complete list of Saginaw County student’s awards at the Michigan Science and
Engineering Fair is below. A complete list of award winners from the Michigan
Science and Engineering Fair is available here.
