SCSEF 30 Judge Registration

SCSEF 2007 Judging Guide

AVAILABLE AFTER LABOR DAY!

Dear Friend of Science,

During the weekend of March 14-16, 2008, the Saginaw Public Schools will host the 30th Annual Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair (SCSEF). The SCSEF will be at the Ruben Daniels Lifelong Learning Center. We expect nearly 400 students from grades 5-12 to display their projects at this year's Fair. We are asking you to join us as a volunteer judge of this year's exhibits. The contribution you make by sharing your expertise with our students is invaluable. The success of SCSEF depends upon the commitment of time offered by Science professionals like you.

All projects will be evaluated by student-judge interviews on Saturday, March 15. We need over 100 judges this year. Please review the choices available to you on the Judge Registration form. Mark your preference on the form and return it to us before March 3. You can also send a message with the information to Monica Rapin-Archer. We can then proceed to assign you to the schedule or seek other individuals to help us if you cannot attend. If you are willing to participate, we will send you a confirmation shortly after we receive your information. This packet will include your schedule and copies of the Judging Guide. Please review these before the Fair; they will familiarize you with our program. If you have friends, co-workers or associates interested in judging our Fair, please send their names and addresses to the SCSEF Offices. We appreciate any help you may be able to offer.

Frequently Asked Judging Questions

As a judge, what are my responsibilities? The best way to describe what your responsibilities are is to describe the weekend. You will be assigned to one division of the Fair. The assignment will be based upon your responses on the attached form, our needs, and your past involvement with the fair. We do our best to meet your requests.

Judges will interview all exhibitors Saturday morning. The judges will be from a variety of backgrounds so we may provide the broadest possible coverage of subject areas. Interviews are 10 to 15 minutes long. Students are instructed to have a short presentation prepared, and to be ready to answer questions from the judges. Judges score the projects on a scale of 1 to 100. These scores will determine our placements. Throughout the judging periods, we will provide a break room with refreshments for judges

How many judges are needed? We will need over 100 judges in 2008. Judges come from mid-Michigan universities, corporations, research facilities, industries and professional organizations. Anyone with some science or engineering background who will volunteer a Saturdays' time to judge the exhibits is welcome. If you have interested people, copy the registration form, or list their name and address on the back of yours. We can use all of the help that we can get!

What can students win? In the Senior Division (grades 9-12), judging interviews select two Saginaw County representatives for the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which is in Atlanta in 2008 and the ten students to represent Saginaw County at the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair (MichSEF).

Senior Division students also compete for a variety of Special Awards. National and local organizations sponsor Special Awards to reward excellent research in specific areas. We expect sharp competition as students compete for these awards and the privilege to represent Saginaw County (all expenses paid) at the ISEF. In the Elementary, Middle and Junior divisions, students will also compete for a variety of local Special Awards. Our fair is a valuable testing ground for student's creative and analytical skills.
