SCSEF30 Basic Rules

All Saginaw Public School students in grades 5-12 may enter the SCSEF. Students attending high school (gr. 9-12) in Saginaw County may enter. Students who hold high school diplomas, or are 21 years old by May 1, are not eligible.

A student may enter only one project and it must be their work. A student must design and carry out the project. Teachers, parents or sponsors must limit help to advice and supervision. The SCSEF does not allow group or team projects.

Each student must have an adult sponsor (teacher/parent/mentor) who is ultimately responsible for the health and safety of the student conducting the experiment and of any human or animal subjects.

Students are responsible for all aspects of their project including enlisting any needed supervisory adults, obtaining necessary approvals, following the rules of the SCSEF and the ISEF, and doing the experimentation, engineering, data analysis, etc. involved in the project. Projects must adhere to all Federal, State and local laws and regulations.

Complete rules are on pages 9-12 of the SCSEF30 Student Handbook. Senior Division students must also follow the rules in the ISEF Rules.

Elementary & Junior Division students must submit the SCSEF30 Entry to the SCSEF office no later than February 15.

All Senior Division students must complete and submit the SCSEF30 Entry, ISEF 1, ISEF 1A, ISEF 1B, their research plan and all other needed ISEF forms to the SCSEF office no later than February 15.

No student can proceed on experimentation involving human subjects, nonhuman vertebrate animals, pathogenic agents, controlled substances, recombinant DNA, or human and/or animal tissue until the SRC approves. Students must submit the appropriate ISEF forms before beginning experimentation. Any proposed research changes made after SRC approval must be re-approved before the experimentation begins/resumes.

Complete rules for Senior Division students are in the ISEF Rules. The rules in the SCSEF30 Student Handbook, are summaries. Refer to the ISEF Rules for specific details.

Senior Division students must submit their abstract to the SCSEF Offices no later than February 29.

Scientific fraud and misconduct is not condoned at any level of research or competition. Plagiarism, use or presentation of other researcher's works as one's own and fabrication or falsification of data will not be tolerated. Fraudulent projects will fail to qualify for competition at the SCSEF, MichSEF or Intel ISEF.

Teacher Information

The SCSEF is a unique educational experience. Students entering SCSEF30 gain self-confidence by developing and completing a research project. We hope to be able to include your students in our program this year. There are no entry fees or required costs for participation for any school. Interested teachers should complete the materials order form (downloadable from this page) and return to the Saginaw County Science & Engineering Fair office as soon as possible. Please use the weeks ahead to work with members of your Science staff to determine how to make this program available to your students.  If you would like to reserve a date for the SCSEF staff to come to your class and make a presentation, please contact the Fair Director at 989-399-6940 or by email. These presentations give students and teachers an opportunity to ask questions regarding all aspects of the science fair.
