In 1957 a new school was proposed to be built on a site on Davenport Avenue. The school was temporarily called Davenport Elementary School The students came from Fuerbringer and Handley School.

1961 was the year the name Dr. Rockwell Kempton was proposed to the Board of Education as the name of our school. Dr. Kempton was a pediatrician practicing in Saginaw, a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and one of the first officers elected to the Michigan Chapter of the "American Academy of Pediatrics". Dr. Kempton was also recognized as an authority on Saginaw Valley history. He made his life's work the medical needs of children. He was loved and respected by everyone who knew and worked with him. November 14th, 1962 Mrs. Rockwell Kempton, School Superintendent Charles C. Coulter and Board of Education President, Harold Karls, put special mementos in the cornerstone of the soon to be Kempton School.

January 3, 1963 Kempton School opened for the first time with 230 students in attendance. The new Kempton School was dedicated at an open house in April, 1963. At this dedication Dr. Kempton's collection of Indian Artifacts were put on display. 41 years later you can still view Dr. Kempton's Indian artifacts in the front hall of Kempton.

Kempton school has also had a special family watching over us throughout the years. Dr. Edgar Balcueva and his wife Mary Jane have lost 4 sons, all of which attended Kempton, to a rare heart disease. This family who has lost so much has also given so much to Kempton. Shortly after their first son passed away in 1985, they donated $4,000 to enable the schools library to double in size. The KCC and the staff also dedicated the school's outdoor classroom to the Balcueva's deceased children in May of 1989. Dr. and Mrs. Balcueva continue to donate items and support the projects of our school to this day. We have been so fortunate to have this wonderful caring family as a part of our history.

Our Kempton Community Council (KCC) was first organized in 1963 and continues to be a strong supporter of the school today holding fundraisers, family oriented events and constant support to the teachers, staff and administration of our school.

Many programs and educational resources have been added to Kempton since the first student entered our building January 3, 1963. Kempton will continue to strive for excellence in education, for the future of our children
