Social Studies
The Social Studies Department offers several classes to its students at Saginaw High School. U. S. History 1 and 2 are required classes for all ninth graders, and U. S. History 3 and 4 is required for tenth graders. Students must earn credit in both ninth and tenth grade history classes in order to meet the requirements for graduation. Seniors are required to take one semester of Government and Economics in order to become eligible for graduation. The Social Studies Department also offers Geography, Sociology and Psychology as electives. Students may select these classes in order to round out their interest in the area of social studies.
Various activities take place in each of the classes in order to give the students a "hands on" approach to learning. For example, Mr. Hight conducts court cases in his government class so that students get a better understanding of the American judicial system. Mrs. Rambler's economics classes run a simulated business on the Internet so that they can fully grasp the concepts associated with the American economic system. Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Klingensmith use the Saginaw News to link history to current events; and they also use period pieces from literature to enhance their teaching.
As a department, we are always on the lookout for activities that will allow our students to prepare themselves for the future. In the fall of 2005, we hope to include guest speakers, and field trips to museums and other areas of interest so that our students can understand the connection between history and everyday life.
